Things to Do Before Starting At UW-W

  1. Make sure all immunizations are up to date and mail the immunization form back to University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS). Recommended: Polio, DPT, Tetanus, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella. Optional: Pneumovax, Meningoccal.
  2. Write down a list of all medications, drug allergies and your health history and keep it in a safe place.
  3. Pack a first aid kit with Band-Aids, thermometer, tweezers and non-prescription medications, at least enough prescription medicine for one month and a self care book with a symptom decision tree.
  4. If you have special medical or psychiatric needs, have the appropriate release of information forms signed and the practitioner's report sent to UHCS. The start of college may not be a good time to change medications, especially psychiatric medication. If you want to continue allergy shots at UHCS, ask the allergist to fill out the UHCS allergy form and send along or ship the allergen.
  5. If you currently have health insurance bring a copy of the card to campus and check the following:
    • How is non-emergency care in the Whitewater area covered?
    • Until what age am I covered by my parent's policy?
    • How many credits do I need to take to be covered?
  6. If you do not have health insurance, try to obtain adequate coverage. Information on a reasonably priced policy endorsed by the university will be sent to your home mid-summer.
  7. Talk to your parents about their willingness to pay for lab tests or medications at UHCS, as needed.
  8. Plan on starting a new phase of your life, making new friends and learning about ideas, people and places you never even knew existed.
  9. Expect to stay at campus the first few weekends to enjoy all the exciting Warhawk Welcome activities.
  10. As soon as you get to campus come to the Ambrose Health Center and check out the Wellness Resource Center in the lobby so you are aware of all the free resources.
