Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?
This question was famously posed by Linda Nochlin in 1971 in her article by the same name. In the throes of second-wave feminism, Nochlin sought to bring to light the fact that — with a few extraordinary exceptions — throughout history women were prevented from becoming artists due to patriarchal norms in the art world and society at large. This talk will highlight some of these exceptional women artists from the medieval period up to the 20th century — including Hildegard of Bingen, Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rose Bertin, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, and Edmonia Lewis.
