Growing Translingual Readers & Writers

Join our email list to be notified of future events.

Join Dr. Leah Shepard-Carey to explore translanguaging strategies you can use to grow your students' confidence as bilingual readers and writers. We'll also learn about specific translanguaging approaches you can use to assess learners' content knowledge and bilingual literacies. Grow your own confidence in theories of bilingual development, biliteracy transfer, sociolinguistics, language ideologies, critical language awareness pedagogies, and translanguaging pedagogies. We will explore examples from bilingual classrooms that use translanguaging and biliteracy methods (e.g. ESL/EAL, bilingual/bicultural and dual language immersion). We will also develop skills for selecting texts, adapting materials, and designing units, lesson plans, and assessments.

Note: Dr. Shepard-Carey brings special experience and knowledge about translanguaging with less commonly taught languages, and with multiple languages in the same classroom. Sessions will be taught primarily in English, participants will have the option to group by shared language to do discussions and activities. Examples will be provided in a variety of languages and language combinations. This course will include readings and collaborative or reflective activities that participants will be asked to do on the days when we are not meeting as a full group. Please keep this in mind as you think about your time, attention, and energy needs during these three weeks.

Required Book: Rooted in Strength: Using Translanguaging to Grow Multilingual Readers and Writers (Cecilia Espinosa and Laura Ascenzi-Moreno). Scholastic.
