Teaching Heritage Languages Through the Language Arts
Do you see the potential of teaching heritage language learners through language arts, but you need a crash-course in how to do it? In this series of workshops, you'll work with veteran Spanish Heritage Language Arts teacher Jen López to learn how to grow and nourish the literacy skills and confidence of your heritage learners in a dynamic, multilingual language arts environment. You'll strengthen your own confidence and abilities to use a variety of language arts approaches, and share resources and ideas with other heritage language teachers. We'll also explore examples of how identity work can fuel a passion for reading and writing across languages, and how multimedia tools can open pathways for expression. We will use culturally sustaining and anti-racist language arts practices that can strengthen and redefine your language teaching. This is a highly collaborative and hands-on workshop series. Come ready to share, learn, and explore!
Weekly Monday sessions (5-7pm CST) will take place as a full-group over Zoom. Jen will be available for drop-in times (optional) on Wednesdays (2:30-4:30pm CST) to meet for independent and small group discussions and work time.
