Race and Ethnic Studies with Heritage/Bilingual Learners
Are you hoping to strengthen your work as a multilingual race and ethnic studies teacher? Do you need to find colleagues who combine language teaching and ethnic studies? Multilingual youth can flourish when our language classrooms are spaces for ethnic studies and language reclamation. And we can flourish as multilingual ethnic studies educators when we do it together!
This course begins by asking: What does ethnic studies mean to your heritage/bilingual students and to you? How can an ethnic studies approach that centers critical language awareness and sustainable multilingualism create rich and healing spaces for collective learning and strength? What is possible when race and ethnic studies inform the content, skills, and teaching methods we use in our teaching with multilingual learners? A Part 2 follow-up series will be offered Spring 2023, which will be a hands-on unit development and dilemma-processing experience. Day/time details will be shared with the group and on the website. When you register, you are registering for Part 1 only. A discount rate for Part 2 will be available for people who have taken Part 1 (Fall 22 or Fall 20 offerings).
Required Book: Please order the following book. We will use it regularly throughout the series. Rethinking Ethnic Studies
Facilitated by Natalia Benjamin (M.Ed., Minnesota Teacher of the Year 2022; K-12 multilingual and ethnic studies teacher). All sessions are virtual, and will be highly interactive. Please be prepared to access shared docs, and have access to microphone and camera.
