Awards Information and Deadlines

The Academic Staff Assembly supports two types of awards – the Excellence Awards for Academic Staff, and the Non-Instructional Rewards and Recognition.

The Academic Staff Excellence award cycle occurs in early spring; nominations for the Excellence Award for Instructional Academic Staff and for the Excellence Award for Academic Staff are due to the Assembly Chair in mid-February.

Nominations for Rewards and Recognition are due the first Monday in March. The Rewards and Recognition are open to non-teaching academic staff only and may include a one-time cash bonus of $250. The Academic Staff Assembly also oversees the Staff Development Grant application process. These grants support individual professional training opportunities that contribute to meeting the needs of the institution.

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks to honor two Academic Staff for their excellent service, one each from the Instructional and one Non-Instructional categories.

The nomination materials may be presented in any form deemed appropriate by the and should address the following criteria:

Excellence of Performance: performance that has set superior standards of excellence and efficiency in relation to the mission of the university, and has resulted in important and significant contributions to the university.

Initiative and Creativity: performance that consistently and substantially demonstrated an innovative approach, thereby improving productivity and the performance of program services.

Outstanding Achievement: performance that consistently and substantially has resulted in important and significant contributions of the program and that has furthered the mission of the university; performance the has resulted in distinction - campus wide, system wide, statewide, nationally or internationally.

Additional information may also include:

  • contributions made through service at the departmental, college, or university level;
  • contributions made in professional organizations, publications, performances, research, etc;
  • professional awards earned;
  • any other information that may assist the selection committee in its deliberations regarding this individual.

Instructional Staff nomination materials, must demonstrate how the above criteria are evidenced in the teaching and classroom performance of the nominee.

Please limit any written narrative to five pages or less (not including letters of recommendation or cover sheet). Up to three letters of recommendation may be submitted with the nomination.

The cover sheet of the nomination must include:

  • Nominee's name
  • His/her position/title
  • Nominee's job description
  • Years of service at the UW-Whitewater
  • Current department
  • Nominator’s name

Please note: If you are nominating someone, be aware that it is beneficial to contact the nominee for the most current and in-depth information.

All nominations must be submitted electronically to the Chair of the Awards Committee by February 15th.

Eligibility

The Awards are limited to Academic Staff at the UW-Whitewater who are employed 50 percent of the time or more, and who have not received the Award in the preceding three years.

Award Details

Award recipients receive:

  • Publication of recipient's name and photo in the UW-Whitewater periodicals.
  • Display of recipient's name and photo in the UW-Whitewater Library for one year (along with faculty Award recipients).
  • Recognition at the Chancellor's annual State of the University Address in the fall semester.
  • Recognition at Spring Commencement.
  • Recognition at the Nominee Reception for Faculty and Academic Staff Awards.
  • Formal presentation of the Award at the annual Awards/Retirement dinner.
  • $500.00 funded by a grant from Commercial Bank and First Citizens State Bank, both of Whitewater.

Additional Information

A completed Recognition Reception Nominee Information Form must also be completed and submitted to the committee chair by March 1. This form will require:

  • Information about the nominee and the award under consideration,
  • A one-paragraph narrative describing the merits of the nominee for this award (max. 200 words).

All complete submitted applications will be reviewed by the Academic Staff Assembly Awards Committee. The recommendations of the Awards Committee are forwarded to the Academic Staff Assembly approval and forwarded to the Chancellor. Awards will be presented by the Chancellor at a ceremony in the Spring.
