Assistant Professor of Scenic and Lighting Design
Matthew is an award winning scenic and lighting designer with over 150 credits to his name. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, he spent ten years designing Off-Broadway, regional, and educational productions while based in New York City. His work has been described by the New York Times as “beautifully designed [and] dreamily evocative.” Selected Off-Broadway: Cat on A Hot Tin Roof; Lone Star; A Modest Proposal (world premiere, Cherry Lane Theatre); soot and spit (New York Times Critic’s Pick); Love and Yogurt (world premiere); Disney’s High School Musical; Frankenstein. Additional New York: Hamlet; Proof, The Rabbit Hole; Danny and the Deep Blue Sea; Chamber Music; The Happy Garden of Life; Primary (world premiere). National Tours: A Charlie Brown Christmas Live!; Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid Panto tours. Selected Regional: A Christmas Carol (premiere by Stephen Temperley); A Chorus Line; Guys and Dolls; Meteor Shower; The Sunshine Boys; 42nd Street; Spring Awakening; Crazy for You; Ragtime; Gypsy; Tartuffe (directed by Annie Occhiogrosso and Randall Duk Kim). Additional credits as a stage director and technical director. Matthew collaborated as the lead designer with Dedo Vabo on Hippos, Inc, an immersive avant-garde performance art installation for the Panorama Music Festival and featured in the New York Magazine.
Matthew holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Production Design from Michigan State University (East Lansing, Michigan) and degrees in Music and Theatre from Luther College (Decorah, Iowa).
