Custodial Maintenance Technician - Facilities Planning & Management - Second-Shift - 21241

INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Facilities Planning and Management at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Custodial Maintenance Technician (Facilities Technician II, FP030) for a second-shift position.

JOB DUTIES:

This position is responsible for providing 2nd shift custodial support, laundry services, equipment repair services, and response to building maintenance emergencies for Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) in the academic buildings. The Custodial Maintenance Technician works under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor and the Director of Buildings and Grounds. The Technician assists the Supervisor and Lead Workers in developing custodial objectives designed to meet the needs of building occupants and the tasks required to achieve these objectives. For an initial training period of 2-4 weeks, this position will work Monday-Friday 5:00am-1:00pm. Once the training period is complete, the normal working hours will be Monday-Friday 12:00pm-8:00pm. Based upon operational need for additional custodial coverage at University events, occasional overtime may be required and changes to your schedule may occur, this may include weekends and times outside your normal shift.

The Custodian Maintenance Technician must practice exemplary behavior when working with customers and fellow staff members. The person holding this position must possess a valid driver's license and qualify for state vehicle operation. This position may direct the work of others, including custodians, temporary employees and student employees. The position is designated at a Level 1 for risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The incumbent will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2 years' total experience in any of the following:
    • Custodial
    • Building or Property Maintenance
    • Other related Facility Maintenance experience
  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to attain UW System driver authorization within first week of employment Driver Authorization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience diagnosing and repairing custodial equipment, motors or small engines
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform a variety of daily, periodic and seasonal duties that require bending, standing for long periods, stooping, kneeling and walking significant distances
  • Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
  • Ability to operate various hand and powered tools
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, cleaning solutions, equipment and materials
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and effective repair methods of same
  • Knowledge of wet cell batteries and the maintenance of same

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A.     Repair and maintain custodial equipment
A1. Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks on custodial equipment.
A2. Order and maintain shop supplies and repair parts as needed. Get repair parts from University Stores if available.
A3. Disassemble, troubleshoot, repair and re-assemble mechanical, custodial equipment, and small appliances. 
A4. Gather part numbers and other information needed to make necessary repairs and send to Supervisor for ordering of same.  
A5. Report findings of any anomalies and repairs to Supervisor.
A6. Pickup and deliver equipment back to original location.
A7. Check, test and maintain electrolyte levels of batteries. Replace batteries as needed.
A8. Determine repair cost effectiveness on equipment and make recommendations to supervisor for replacement as necessary.
A9. Maintain shop & work areas in a clean and safe condition.
A10. Perform annual inventory of custodial equipment by location.

B.     Perform custodial work and provide support to custodial operations
B1. Establish and maintain good working relationships with personnel with all other people using buildings.
B2. Perform routine custodial work (including but not limited to dusting, restroom cleaning, vacuuming and floor care, waste and recycling removal) in assigned areas as directed.
B3. Plan and coordinate custodial activities, special work projects and events to be performed around building occupancy to minimize disruption.
B4. Coordinate flex and vacation requests with the supervisor and arrange custodial coverage for scheduled absences. 
B5. Coordinate with the supervisor and assist Custodian Leads with covering scheduled and unscheduled absences whenever possible.
B6. Participate in scheduled and/or emergency overtime work in various campus buildings.
B7. Communicate constantly with supervisor and Custodian Leads regarding building issues.
B8. Lock and unlock buildings as required.

C.     Perform laundry duties
C1. Collect laundry from academic buildings.
C2. Wash and dry laundry per instructions pertinent to type of laundry.
C3. Remove and replace worn cleaning rags as appropriate for each building.
C4. Deliver clean laundry to academic buildings.
C5. Wash laundry delivered to zone office from the University Center bowling alley.
C6. Perform scheduled maintenance and incidental repairs of laundry equipment.

D.     Perform basic troubleshooting and building maintenance operations
D1. Perform routine and non-routine inspections of facilities and infrastructure to ensure proper operation.
D2. Respond to trouble calls of both a custodial and maintenance nature in buildings during and after normal business hours.
D3. Troubleshoot, escalate and document issues according to established policies and procedures.
D4. Assist craftworkers and facility maintenance staff, as well as vendors and technical staff, with diagnosis, operation and corrective maintenance of facility issues as needed.

E.     Perform miscellaneous tasks within the academic zone, as directed
E1. Coordinate and perform bulb and other recycling as necessary.
E2. Coordinate academic zone custodial snow removal effort with Custodian Leads and assist in zone snow and ice removal efforts.
E3. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting hourly wage between $19/hr-$21/hr.
